We all know about the importance of building strong relationships in our personal and professional lives but how many of us appreciate the importance of developing ‘Weak Ties’?
Sociologist, Mark Granovetter, developed a fascinating theory around the Strength of Weak Ties: his research revealed that Weak Ties—those casual connections and loose acquaintances we have—are surprisingly powerful.
Here’s why:
Our Strong Ties are likely to be people we know very well, people we trust, people who think like we do and share our values and interests, people we collaborate with – and, often, they’re people very like ourselves! They are also likely to know the people we know, so our Strong Ties can constitute a semi-closed loop.
By contrast, our Weak Ties are likely to embody more diversity and their connections are likely to be different folk to our own connections and their sources of information, perspectives, and insights are likely to be different to ours.
The Potential of Weak Ties
- Information Flow: Strong ties provide emotional support, but weak ties bridge different social circles – crucial for accessing diverse information and opportunities.
- Viral Spread: Ever wonder why certain trends or ideas catch on? Information spreads virally through networks – the wider our networks, the wider the spread of ideas we’re exposed to and the wider the spread for our own ideas.
- Problem Solving: Sometimes the solution to problems lie with someone you don’t know well—a weak tie who brings fresh perspectives.
- Groupthink: Consciously engaging with folk with differing experiences and perspectives to ourselves helps us avoid the hazard of Groupthink.
- Innovation: Looking to innovate – talk with people with experiences and backgrounds diverse to your own to spark new ideas and possibilities..
Remember, weak ties thrive on diversity. Seek out connections beyond your usual circles, and be genuinely interested in others. Even seemingly insignificant interactions can lead to unexpected opportunities!
